Exploration & Production Business Simulation
Technical & Commercial Business Management

Course Introduction

This three day E&P Business Simulation training course is designed for groups working within the E&P sector to experience the process of formulating a medium term E&P Business Plan. The course will draw on technical, commercial and management skills as the teams work on building a 5-year plan for a business comprising of producing assets, appraised and unapprised discoveries, several exploration opportunities, and limited infrastructure.  The portfolio includes both Gas and Oil assets and the plan encompasses not only the commercial issues of exploration & production but also the social and infrastructural issues of progressing E&P projects.

This course is run as a business simulation, with groups of attendees working in teams, supported and guided by two experienced tutors. The groups spend the three days working through the portfolio and formulating their business plans against an evolving series of technical, commercial and social in-country issues, and at the end of the course present the business plan to the group.

Course Description

The E&P Business Simulation is based on a fictitious federation in Asia, with a social, political, environmental and economic background fully described in a team brief. Course participants will be separated into small teams who will work in parallel to establish a 5-year business plan for the further development of the region.

Access to finance is limited, and cash flow planning becomes critical as the groups determine how to plan an exploration, appraisal and development budget with the limited revenue from their producing assets. As the simulation progresses, various changes are introduced to external parameters such as oil price, environmental legislation and political pressures, and the teams are required to respond to these.  The successful group will be able to integrate the technical, commercial, financial issues as well as the external environment factors.

‘Expertise’ can be sought by the teams, in the shape of the tutors on-site, who will role play the various in-country agencies, or act as in-country consultants, as required.  The tutors also ensure that the teams keep on-track and will provide necessary technical and commercial detail to assist the simulation.  Spreadsheets for production forecasting and economic analysis of the production sharing environment are provided for use during the course.

On completion, course participants will be able to:

o    Apply a systematic approach to the analysis and valuation of assets at each stages of the Field Life Cycle (FLC)
o    Define activity plans for assets throughout the Field Life Cycle
o    Identify, quantify and mitigate risk and uncertainty
o    Incorporate technical, commercial and other uncertainties into business decision making.
o    Optimise a technical plan for the company’s assets, trading off high value activities against low value activities.
o    Develop a commercial case for the chosen technical plan and path.

Target Attendees

The course is designed for a mixture of mid-level experienced Petro Technical (professionals from Exploration, Development, Drilling, Production) and Business staff who are seeking to develop portfolio management skills.  The course has previously been of benefit both to commercial staff, who have an interest in understanding the linkages between subsurface and surface engineering issues, and also to geosciences and engineering professionals seeking a deeper understanding of commercial issues surrounding E&P projects.

Attend as a multi-disciplinary team to maximise your learning experience. Special team discounts apply for this course!
